Our History

In 1951, A.B. Frey turned an old Esso gas station into a dedicated auto transmission repair specialty facility. Part of the building was still an old barn from the family’s roots in Red Lion. The building south of the barn was built, and A. B. Frey Transmission, Inc. was up and running. Alvin and Mildred Frey retired in 1996 when they sold their business to Brian Winograd who changed the name to Broadway Transmission & More.

Winograd had been working for a major automotive transmission chain but was always being asked to do things against what he thought was fair, honest and sometimes even legal. This was a daily struggle and a fight that he did not want to continue, and he knew it was only a matter of time before he would be replaced for following his conscience and not the way of the big chain. Then, in 1955, he was introduced to Alvin Frey who was motivated to sell his transmission repair shop by a auto transmission parts salesperson who knew it would benefit him to make both these men happy. While one was looking for a way to retire and still keep the tradition he had established since 1951, the other was seeking to get away from the rat race and dishonesty of the big transmission repair chain store.

“There was one big problem, though” as Brian recalls. “I had no money as I had just built a house and was taking care of my mother who was dying from cancer. So I walked into his shop and said, My name is Brian Winograd and I’d like to buy your business but I have no money.” Alvin was very motivated to sell, and he knew the reputation Brian had made in the industry during the previous five years. So he told Brian to put something down on paper and they would work it out.

The rest is history, as they say. On September 3, 1996, the name of the business was officially and legally changed to Broadway Transmission & More, and Brian is pleased to say that he has paid Alvin off and owns the business, property and equipment, free and clear.

Brian loves the fact that they still are using the old barn for some repairs and that the old fashioned way of doing things is still alive and blending well with new technology and efficiency at Broadway Transmission. From time to time, the building needs some repair but for the most part, the exterior of the property has remained the same.
